What Limitations Apply to a Schedule that includes Connecting Flights?

Children 5 to 7 years old (inclusive) may only fly alone on nonstop or direct flights (which make one stop without changing planes). They are not permitted to board any American Connection flights that need a flight attendant or on any connecting flights. Additionally, they are prohibited from flying on flights with a single flight number that are scheduled with a change to a different type of aircraft before departure.

On nonstop, direct, and connected flights through Charlotte (CLT), Chicago (ORD), Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Los Angeles (LAX), Miami (MIA), New York (JFK and LGA), Philadelphia (PHL), Phoenix (PHX), and Washington Reagan, children 8 to 14 (inclusive) are permitted to fly alone (DCA). The destination must receive confirmation of the reservations. There are additional limitations on connecting flights:

  • If the schedule calls for a connection to or from another airline, including oneworld and codeshare partners, the unaccompanied minor will not be allowed.
  • If the schedule contains the final connecting flight of the day, the unaccompanied minor will not be permitted unless it is the sole flight available.
  • If the schedule calls for overnight connections, the Unaccompanied Minor will not be permitted unless it is the sole flight available.
  • Because unaccompanied children under the age of 15 are not permitted to use ground transportation alone, the unaccompanied minor will not be approved for ground/co-terminal connecting itineraries (such as moving from London Gatwick to London Heathrow).
  • When there is a chance, the child won't make a connection and overnight accommodations are necessary, American Airlines may refuse to admit an unaccompanied minor with reservations.
